Providing vision – Leaders have a vision, sharing a dream and direction that other people want to share and follow.  This leadership vision goes beyond the mission-vision objective of your organization.  At the same time, that vision permeates the workplace and is shown through the actions, beliefs, values, and goals of the person who leads.

Providing inspiration – An effective leader has an ability to inspire people to reach higher performance goals.  This is backed by passion, a sense of purpose, listening to people, and meaning.

Making others feel important – A true leader excels at creating opportunities to provide rewards, recognition, and appreciation to his or her people.  The leader creates a work environment in which people feel important and appreciated.

Living the values you believe in – Leaders believe in their values and practice what they preach.  They recognize the importance of living with ethical behavior, and is reflected on how their actions every single day.

Setting the pace – An effective leader tells his or her people the goals and qualities the organization is expected to perform.  And in order to reach that expectation, the leader must set an example that others will follow.

An environment of continuous improvement – A great leader does not make slaves out of his people.  He or she leads the people towards a vision, and at the same time creates an environment wherein they can perform better.  The leader should also provide opportunities for people to grow, both personally and professionally.

Care and act with compassion – One thing an outstanding leader possess is heart.  A leader cares for his or her people and rules them with compassion rather than dictatorship.
